Unfortunately, it seems as if some people believe that if you are a dog breeder you must be a puppy mill. This is the farthest thing from the truth. People with kennel businesses generally love their dogs. Why else would they work at a job 24/ 7 without vacations and with no days off?!
As with most kennel businesses, the puppies health is my top priority. My puppies are fat, healthy happy babies. They are kept current on their wormings and vaccinations. The puppies all get a pre-sale vet examination, a health guarantee and contract. It is doubtful that a "puppy mill" bothers with these .
My adult dogs are all are "free-fed" and have dry food dispensers which means that they all eat as much of dry kibble that they desire. They are fed treats, and "wet food" or "raw food" for part of their diets. They are friendly, well adjusted dogs.
My adult dogs are all current on their vaccinations, including rabies. My dogs are licensed. My dogs see a veterinarian when necessary. Yes, there are years when my vet bills for their care is astronomical !
It has always been my assumption that a puppy mill keeps their dogs in small unkept cages. My kennels are the large "Powder River" or "AKC" type dog panels. They have access to a grassy, treed back yard to dig and run in. They are not kept in wire floored cages, because then you will have issues housebreaking your puppy. If a puppy is kept in a large clean pen where it can have a potty spot away from his/her food, play area and sleeping area they will become accustomed to keeping their living space clean and that is the first step towards easier housebreaking.
It is also my assumption that a puppy mill breeds many types of dogs. I do not. I specialize in the "doodle" or poodle breeds. I mainly have the lovely Golden doodles. I also have had Aussie doodle puppies and sheep a doodles . ..and cockapoos (cocka doodles) Again, these are all Doodles! There are usuallky 2 steers in the pasture during the summer months. That is all the animals on these 20 acres, except for 2 indoor/ outdoor cats that love dogs. Of course there are deer, wild turkies and other critters that wander through, but that is rural life in Oregon!
My kennels are inspected by licensed officials, both as regular expected inspections and "surprise" inspections. My kennels have always passed without any issues.
Because I breed dogs, I have been accused of being a meth user! LOL, I must be the fattest meth user anyone has ever met! Seriously, my drugs of choice are good coffee and Ibuprofen for my arthritis.
Some peoples perspective of a kennel business seems skewed, they believe if a business has three litters of puppies at a time they have too many to take care of. These same people admit that their puppy they adopted here is friendly, happy and a wonderful dog, although they dont realize that lack of care would not have produced a puppy with those qualities. Unfortunately nature conspires to have female dogs all cycle at the same time , which means I do occasionally have several litters of puppies with close birth dates. Thank goodness that my qualified employees are able to help with kennel chores and and the neighbors children help with socialization.
I have been told that people who have received a puppy from me in Sacramento complained that I charged for the delivery. Yes, a 6 hour drive (each way!) will be charged, this is explained on my webpage " Shipping/ delivery of your puppy". So is the claim that their puppy was dirty. As stated on my webpage, "What to expect when expecting your puppy", doodles get carsick. I can not help this unless I am willing to give the puppies medications which are not safe for 8 week old puppies. Doodles usually do outgrow their tendency to be carsick , but babies will sometimes arrive wet and messy. That is why I suggest several times on this website to bring paper towels, a trash sack and hand wash. Thank goodness a quick bath and a blow dry resolves this issue as soon as you arrive home with your "dirty" but lovable new puppy!
It is true, I have been called "rude" and a "bully" because I wont sell a puppy to someone whose entire family is not fully commited and along for the ride! Please read my "How to know that you are not ready for a puppy" webpage. A puppy sold to a family who has a member waffling over dog ownership needs to wait until everyone is on board and truly ready to adopt a new member of the family. Any reputable kennel business wants their babies to go to a home that will be able to privide a lifetime home for them. These are live animals, not just a pair of socks!! We are not a big box store that sells to just any customer, we are offering companion puppies to good homes. Our puppies are bred to be your best friend and we want to find the perfect home for each and every one!
